Uterine Fibroids Treatments

Uterine fibroids treatments vary from major surgical intervention to non-invasive MR guided Ultrasound intervention. The most familiar surgical procedure for fibroid treatment is the hysterectomy. For many years, this was the only option other than just living with the pain and discomfort. Rather than give up a part of their bodies, many women have made the choice to just endure the pain.

Another treatment option for uterine fibroids is the abdominal myomectomy. This is still an invasive procedure. It requires making an abdominal incision, opening the uterus, and removing the fibroids. General anesthesia is required and the recovery time is often several weeks--much like a hysterectomy.

A treatment that was introduced to avoid the removal of the uterus or opening the abdomen for fibroid removal was patterned after the heart catheterization technique. Uterine artery embolization was accomplished by inserting a catheter through the uterine artery and injecting beads of particles to block the blood flow to the tumor.

MR guided Focused Ultrasound Treatment, also known as SonoWave, is the latest option for fibroid relief, and it is performed by only using general anesthesia. This is a completely non-invasive procedure that is providing relief to hundreds of women. The recovery time is brief--only a couple of days--and you are back to your usual routine. For more information, call us at the Beverly Tower Wilshire Advanced Imaging Center at 310-689-3101.

Even though the procedure is not covered by insurance, anyone who meets the qualifications can have the procedure by paying cash. You must be at least 18 and desire no more pregnancies.
