Uterine Fibroid Tumors
Uterine fibroid tumors can be tiny and asymptomatic,
or they can cause excruciating pain and grow larger than
a grapefruit. Sometimes, even the small ones cause symptoms
if there are several. The small ones often grow in clusters
resembling the effects of one larger tumor. Whether it
is one large tumor or several small ones, when pain and
discomfort are present, something must be done.
Many women tolerate the pain month after month thinking
it will eventually get better. The only way the pain
of uterine fibroid tumors goes away is when the tumors
shrink to the point of relieving the pressure or if they
are removed completely. A total hysterectomy is the only
way to completely guarantee that the tumors are gone
forever.
There are, however, alternative treatments without the
invasive surgical option of the hysterectomy. MR guided
Focused Ultrasound Treatment (MRgFUS) is the latest option
to be approved by the FDA. This is a process of using
ultrasound heat under the guidance of magnetic resonance
imaging to precisely zap the tumor with enough heat to
cause it to necrose (die). Once the tumor dies, it is
naturally reabsorbed by the body.
Beverly Tower Wilshire Advanced Imaging Center is one
of only a few locations in the nation where this treatment
is an option. We have some of the best trained staff
that you will find in any facility. Our professionals
are on the cutting edge with this technology. We use
the ExAblate™ 2000 System to perform this procedure. Give
