Uterine Artery Embolization
Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is one of the treatments
offered as an alternative to a hysterectomy. This process
involves the uterine artery being injected via a catheter
with polyvinyl alcohol beads. This causes necrosis (death)
of the fibroids by blocking the blood supply to the fibroids.
This procedure leaves the uterus intact, since it is
a non-surgical procedure. The correct placement of the
polyvinyl particles is crucial for adequate results.
Uterine artery embolization, or uterine fibroid embolization
is an option to treat uterine fibroids without the need
for a hysterectomy or myomectomy. The procedure is minimally
invasive through an incision made in the groin and the
femoral artery. With the use of a catheter inserted through
the femoral artery to the uterine artery, the PVA particles
are deposited.
While the procedure has been used with some success,
there are reports of continued growth of fibroids for
as long as four years after the UAE. Beverly Tower Wilshire
Advanced Imaging Center offers the latest technology
in treatment for fibroids using MR guided Focused Ultrasound
Treatment to treat the painful fibroids.
If you have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids, and
you are over the age of 18, you may be a candidate for
this procedure. You must have had all the pregnancies
you desire before being considered as a candidate. Our
Study Coordinator will be glad to speak with you about
your options for treatment. Just call 310-689-3101 to
schedule your session.
