Myomectomy
A myomectomy is the surgical removal of uterine fibroids
while leaving the uterus intact. It is a procedure that
is performed by a surgeon either as a laparoscopic procedure,
a hysteroscopy, or a laparotomy. The type of procedure
will be determined by the location and size of the fibroid.
General anesthesia and a short hospitalization of one
to two days is usually required.
The abdominal myomectomy is the preferred choice for
removal of large or multiple fibroids, while the laparoscopic
approach is used for fibroids attached to the outside
of the uterus. The hysteroscopic myomectomy is the removal
of fibroids inside the uterine cavity through the insertion
of a hysteroscope through the vagina and cervical canal.
A Welcome Myomectomy Alternative
There is an alternative to a myomectomy for the hundreds
of thousands of women in the United States who have hysterectomies
or myomectomies every year. Thanks to the invention of
SonoWave technology, non-surgical help has been approved.
Since uterine fibroids are the main reason for these
surgical procedures, these numbers can be reduced considerably
with this advanced utilization of ultrasound and magnetic
resonance imaging combination.
While the large majority of women with uterine fibroids
never experience any symptoms, for those who do, this
is a welcome alternative to a surgical procedure. A complete
examination is required with documentation of the presence
of treatable uterine fibroids. Those found close to the
bowel or bladder, or any fibroids outside the image area
are not eligible for treatment. For more information
