Leiomyomas
Leiomyomas of the uterus are noncancerous growths that
are frequently diagnosed in women between 30 and 45 years
of age, and are the cause of about 25 percent of all
hysterectomies performed each year in the United States.
They are more commonly called myomas or fibroids. While
they can occur singly, most often there are multiple
fibroids in various sizes.
The recommended treatment by your physician will be
determined mostly by the symptoms you are experiencing
and your age. If symptoms arise as you approach menopause,
the treatment of choice may be simply to watch and wait.
Often, leiomyomas will disappear once estrogen production
ceases. The downside to waiting, though, is that they
can become too large to treat with minimal or non-invasive
techniques.
Non-Invasive Treatment for Leiomyomas
The latest treatment for leiomyomas to enter the picture
is known as SonoWave or MR guided focused ultrasound
therapy. This treatment is non-invasive and may decrease
symptoms without requiring hospitalization or general
anesthesia. Recovery time is minimal, with most women
returning to normal activities within one or two days
as opposed to weeks following a hysterectomy.
Beverly Tower Wilshire Advanced Imaging Center is one
of the first few medical centers in the United States
equipped with this latest technology. If your doctor
has diagnosed you with uterine fibroids, discuss the
option of SonoWave. Insurance companies are not covering
SonoWave at this time, but patients can pay cash and
we can begin the appeals process with the insurance company
to get the patient reimbursed. For more information,
