Insightec has changed the way women can choose to deal
with the pain and discomfort of fibroid tumors. The development
of ExAblate™ 2000 has given an option for non-invasive
treatment instead of the traditional hysterectomy. This
technique uses MR guided Focused Ultrasound Treatment
(MRgFUS) to treat tumors that are growing inside the
body without the need for making any incision.
The potential for this type of intervention is unlimited
with the latest FDA approval that includes the ablation
of fibroid tumors. Other anticipated applications include
tumors of the thyroid, kidney, bladder, and other organs.
This widespread usage is proving the procedure to be
safe and effective when performed properly.
At Beverly Tower Wilshire Advanced Imaging Center, we
are one of the few locations in the nation with the expertise
and approval to use the MRgFUS as an alternative treatment
for uterine fibroids. The procedure uses MR images to
identify the fibroids. Once the precise location of the
tumor is located, a high energy focused ultrasound wave
is used to heat the fibroid to 85 degrees C. Pulsation
lasts about 20 seconds for each sonication. The process
may be repeated as much as 50 times, depending on the
size of the fibroid.
