Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is one of the most controversial surgeries.
For decades it was done almost routinely if a woman had
any complaints of abdominal pain or discomfort. It seemed
to be the "catch-all" for all female ills.
Eventually, doctors began looking at the option of removing
the uterus and leaving the ovaries to avoid initiating
surgical menopause.
As the baby boomer generation began experiencing the
ills of the feminine body, it became more apparent to
the medical community that women wanted to keep all of
their body parts, including the uterus. Intervention
to deal with the pain caused by uterine fibroids and
cysts was raised to a new level when technology became
involved.
Now, there is a way to resolve the pain and leave the
uterus intact. This intervention is known as MR guided
Focused Ultrasound Treatment, or SonoWave. With the use
of the ExAblate™ 2000 system, it is as if the doctor can
see directly inside your body. It is real-time magnetic
resonance imaging with the use of high intensity ultrasound
waves to pulse heat or ultrasound energy directly into
the fibroid.
Beverly Tower Wilshire Advanced Imaging Center is excited
to offer one of the few locations for this cutting-edge
treatment. If you have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids,
and have no desire to become pregnant in the future,
give us a call at 310-689-3101. Our Study Coordinator
will discuss your options and answer any questions you
may have about the procedure. At this time, insurance
companies do not cover this procedure. It is, however,
approved by the FDA.
