Fibroid Removal
Fibroid removal has been the major cause of hysterectomies
for decades. The presence of fibroids can cause intense
abdominal and back pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and
general discomfort. The good news is that most fibroids
are non-cancerous; however, because of the pain, they
most likely will need to be removed.
Fibroids can be very small--about the size of a coin--and
never be noticed or cause any symptoms. They can also
be larger than a grapefruit, or even a melon. It is possible
for a fibroid to enlarge the uterus equal to a seven-month
pregnancy. Sometimes this is a result of one large fibroid,
and other times, it is a collection of multiple small
fibroids.
A great alternative to the invasive hysterectomy is
the MR guided Focused Ultrasound treatment. It is done
as an outpatient procedure, and most patients can return
to normal activities within a couple of days. The MRI
is used to provide 3-D imaging of the internal organs.
The ultrasound is aimed at the fibroid, and the intense
heat ablates the cells without damaging other tissue.
If you have been diagnosed with fibroids, you may be
a candidate for this cutting-edge fibroid treatment.
In order to qualify, you must be at least 18 years of
age and desire no more pregnancies. The ability to conceive
following treatment is still under study. Browse our
