Alternative For
Myomectomy
Myomectomy is the removal of uterine fibroids by a hysteroscopy,
laparoscopy, or laparotomy. It is an option for removing
the fibroids while leaving the uterus intact. This is
particularly important for females who desire to retain
the possibility of becoming pregnant. Risks include infection
of the uterus, scar tissue causing infertility, and injury
to the bladder or bowel. Some hospitalization and anesthesia
is required for either of these procedures.
An alternative for the traditional myomectomy is a recently
FDA approved procedure using magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) and ultrasound to locate and destroy uterine fibroids.
This non-invasive procedure is recommended for women
who do not intend to become pregnant, but desire to keep
their uterus intact. There is no need to suffer for years
hoping that relief will come when the estrogen level
drops at menopause or opting for procedures requiring
hospitalization.
A Non-Surgical Option
The ExAblate™ 2000 System, also known as SonoWave, is
effective in treating most uterine fibroids by using
an ultrasound beam that heats and destroys the fibroid.
This technique has been used successfully in hundreds
of women, providing relief from the pain and discomfort
of fibroids without the recovery time of an invasive
procedure. Patients can usually return to work within
a couple of days.
